Who it suits

Designed for two adults travelling together. The rhythm suits most ages, and the two walks on the route are optional — but it is not structured around family or group needs.

Overview

What this journey is about.

Most Sri Lankan honeymoons are sold on the south coast, which is precisely where the island is least reliable between May and September. This route puts the beach half on the east instead. Two nights in Kandy, three in the hills above Ella, then five consecutive nights on one shallow, reef-protected bay at Pasikuda, where the sea is usually flat in the same weeks that the south-west monsoon is working over Galle and Mirissa.

It is built for couples who marry in June, July or August and want a full fortnight-length trip rather than a compressed week. You change hotel four times in twelve days, and the two long legs are treated as days in their own right rather than absorbed into a morning. The descent off the escarpment to the coast leaves at 07:30 and takes about five hours, with a proper break at Mahiyanganaya and an hour at the Maduru Oya tank where the timing holds. The run back towards the airport is about seven hours in one go, which is why the trip ends with a night at Habarana instead of a single punishing transfer on departure day.

A private vehicle and driver travel with you throughout. Accommodation is described here by character and setting only — no property has been contracted for this route, and the specific hotels are named in your quotation and confirmed against your dates.

What makes it distinctive

  • Five consecutive nights on one bay — the beach half is a stay, not a stopover
  • Only four hotel changes across twelve days
  • The east coast is chosen because the south is unreliable in these months, not as a second choice
  • Both long transfers get their own day, with stops that earn the distance
  • Hill walks are scheduled at first light, before the afternoon cloud builds

The route at a glance

Airport (CMB) → Kandy → Ella → Pasikuda → Habarana → Airport (CMB)

This journey is a starting point, not a fixed product. It can be adjusted to your dates, interests, pace, mobility, accommodation preferences and budget.

Journey highlights

Reasons this route endures.

The evening pooja in Kandy

The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic at the evening pooja, with a guide who stays with you through it and explains what is happening — rather than leaving you at the door with a ticket.

A morning above Ella

Little Adam's Peak walked early, then breakfast in a tea garden below the ridge — done before the hill cloud builds over the escarpment.

The descent to the east coast

Off the ridge by Badulla and Mahiyanganaya, with an hour at the Maduru Oya tank where the timing holds. A travelling day that gives something back rather than one swallowed whole.

Five nights on the bay at Pasikuda

A shallow, reef-protected bay you can wade a long way out into, with snorkelling straight off the beach on the days the water runs clear.

Batticaloa: fort, lagoon, and a story

The Dutch fort and the old town around it, then out on the lagoon at dusk with a boatman who grew up on it and knows the singing fish story from the inside.

Polonnaruwa on the way home

The ancient capital taken slowly on the leg back inland, breaking a seven-hour transfer into two manageable halves.

Day by day

12 days, carefully sequenced.

Open any day for the full plan. The exact sequence may be adjusted around weather, local conditions and your pace, nothing here is set in stone.

Airport (CMB) → Kandy · 3–3.5 hours excluding stops

Day 01Arrival and the road up to the hill capital

Easy

Morning

Met at Bandaranaike International Airport and driven towards Kandy, with a comfort stop on the way. Nothing else is scheduled today.

Afternoon

Check in and rest. If your flight lands early and you would rather stay awake, a walk around Kandy Lake is the gentlest way to do it.

Evening

A quiet first dinner, arranged by your driver or by the property.

Kandy
Good to know

Deliberately light after a long-haul flight. The Colombo–Kandy road is slow in stretches and the time above excludes traffic.

Kandy

Day 02The gardens, the lake and the evening pooja

Easy

Morning

A late start. The Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya are twenty minutes away and quiet before mid-morning — a long shaded walk rather than a tour.

Afternoon

Time in town or back at the property. Your guide runs through dress and conduct before the temple: shoulders and knees covered, shoes left at the entrance, phones down inside the shrine.

Evening

The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic at the evening pooja. The guide stays with you through it and explains what is actually happening — the drumming, the queue, why the inner chamber opens when it does — instead of handing you a ticket and waiting outside.

Breakfast (included) · Others to be confirmed
Stay
Kandy
Optional

A Kandyan dance performance earlier in the evening, where the schedule allows.

Good to know

The temple is busy at pooja and there are steps and a slow-moving queue. If standing for a long stretch is difficult, tell us in advance and a seated wait can be arranged.

Kandy → Ella · About 3–3.5 hours to Nanu Oya, then 2.5–3 hours by rail — or 5.5–6.5 hours by road throughout

Day 03Up through tea country to the escarpment

Easy to moderate

Morning

Away after breakfast, climbing through the central highlands towards Nanu Oya with stops for the views and a working tea estate where opening hours allow.

Afternoon

The hill-country train from Nanu Oya to Ella, subject to confirmed ticket availability, while your driver takes the luggage round by road and meets you at the station.

Evening

Settle in above Ella. The centre is small and walkable if you want dinner out.

Good to know

The fullest travelling day of the first half. It exists so that Ella then gets three nights rather than one.

Ella

Day 04Little Adam's Peak, early, and breakfast in a tea garden

Easy to moderate

Morning

Out early for Little Adam's Peak — a steady, largely stepped path of about forty-five minutes to the top, walked while the escarpment is still clear. Breakfast afterwards in a tea garden below the ridge.

Afternoon

Back at the property through the warm middle of the day. Nothing is scheduled.

Evening

Nine Arch Bridge in the late afternoon, timed against the posted train schedule where it holds — though the schedule frequently does not.

Ella
Good to know

In July and August these hills are usually clear at first light and clouded over by early afternoon. That is why this is a 06:30 start and not a 09:00 one.

Ella

Day 05A day with nothing fixed in it

Easy

Morning

At leisure. If you want something: Ravana Falls, a short tea-factory visit, or the easy walk out along the line towards Demodara.

Afternoon

Free. Your driver knows the area and can put together an afternoon on the day if you would rather move.

Evening

Dinner wherever you prefer, in the village or at the property.

Meals
Breakfast (included) · Others to be confirmed
Stay
Ella
Optional

Lipton's Seat at dawn — about two hours each way from Ella by road, and only worth doing on a clear morning.

Good to know

Waterfalls run hard through the south-west monsoon months and the rock around them is slippery. Swimming below falls is not part of the plan on this route.

Ella → Pasikuda · About 5 hours excluding stops via Mahiyanganaya; nearer 6 by the Batticaloa road

Day 06Off the escarpment to the east coast

Easy

Morning

Away by 07:30, down through Badulla and over towards Mahiyanganaya, off the escarpment before the hill cloud closes in behind you. A proper break at Mahiyanganaya — a sit-down stop, not a roadside pause.

Afternoon

An hour at the Maduru Oya tank on the way through where the timing holds: open water, dry-zone forest and good odds on birds along the bund. Then on through Chenkaladi to Pasikuda.

Evening

The first evening on the bay. Nothing arranged.

Driving
About 5 hours excluding stops via Mahiyanganaya; nearer 6 by the Batticaloa road

Pasikuda
Good to know

The longest driving day on this route, which is why it is quoted as a day of its own rather than folded into a morning. Elephants move across the dry-zone stretch around dusk, a further reason for the early departure.

Pasikuda

Day 07The bay, and not much else

Easy

Morning

A late breakfast and the beach. The bay shelves very gradually here — you can wade a long way out and still be standing in waist-deep water, which is the whole reason the beach half sits at Pasikuda.

Afternoon

Snorkelling straight off the beach on the days the water runs clear, over the shallow reef that keeps the bay flat.

Evening

Free.

Reef shoes are worth packing. The sun here is direct in these months and shallow water gives no relief from it.

Pasikuda → Batticaloa → Pasikuda · 45–60 minutes each way

Day 08The fort, the lagoon and the singing fish

Easy

Morning

A slow morning at the property — the day starts after lunch.

Afternoon

Down to Batticaloa for the Dutch fort and the streets around it: a small, low, workmanlike seventeenth-century square that has been a garrison, a colonial office and a government building in turn.

Evening

Out on the lagoon at dusk with a boatman who grew up on it, and the singing fish story told properly — what people say they hear, where and when they hear it, and the several competing explanations that have been offered over the years.

The sound is faint, seasonal and not heard on most evenings. Nobody can promise you will hear it, and a boatman who does is selling you something.

Day 09A day on the water

Easy

Morning

Day 11Back inland, by way of an ancient capital

Easy to moderate

Morning

Leave after breakfast and cross the dry zone towards Polonnaruwa.

Afternoon

The ancient capital at an unhurried pace — driven between the main clusters with short walks at each, rather than the full circuit on foot in the heat. The Quadrangle and the Gal Vihara are the two that repay time.

Evening

On to Habarana, about an hour further, for the last night.

Good to know

This night exists to break a seven-hour transfer into two halves. Habarana is chosen for where it sits on the road home, not for anything else.

Habarana → Airport (CMB) · About 4–4.5 hours to the airport

Signature experiences

Moments worth travelling for.

A honeymoon planned around the monsoon, not despite it

The reason this route exists. Between May and September the south-west monsoon makes the south coast unreliable for swimming and for sitting outside, while Pasikuda on the east is usually calm and dry. Couples who marry in the European summer are otherwise sold the south coast anyway, with an apology attached.

Tea-country mornings, kept early

The hills above Ella are at their clearest in the first two hours of light in July and August and generally clouded by early afternoon. The walk and the tea-garden breakfast are scheduled accordingly, which is the difference between a view and a wall of white.

Water you can stand up in

The bay at Pasikuda is shallow and reef-protected, so the sea stays flat when the open coast is not. Snorkelling runs straight off the beach on the days the water is clear — and clarity varies with wind and swell, so some days it is simply swimming.

The lagoon at dusk

Batticaloa lagoon after sunset, with someone who has fished it since childhood. The singing fish is a genuine local phenomenon and a genuinely contested one — the story is worth the evening whether or not you hear anything, and no boatman can promise that you will.

Quiet arrangements for the occasion

Private dinners, a quieter room, small touches for a newly married couple — arranged in advance where a property can actually do it, and confirmed in the quotation rather than implied here.

Physical activity and comfort

Honest numbers, no surprises.

Overall difficulty
Easy to moderate

One optional forty-five-minute hill walk; everything else is flat, driven or entirely at leisure.

Longest driving day
About 5 hours

Ella to Pasikuda on day 6, run as its own day with a 07:30 departure, a proper break at Mahiyanganaya and an hour at the Maduru Oya tank where timing allows.

The way home
Split over two days

Pasikuda to the airport is about seven hours in one go. The route ends with a night at Habarana instead — roughly 3–3.5 hours on day 11 and 4–4.5 on day 12.

Early starts
Two

The 06:30 walk to Little Adam's Peak on day 4, and the 07:30 departure off the escarpment on day 6. Both are there for a reason and both can be dropped.

Terrain
Mostly paved

Town streets, garden paths, one stepped hill path, exposed archaeological ground at Polonnaruwa, and beach sand.

Sea conditions
Sheltered but variable

The reef keeps the bay flat in these months. Underwater visibility still changes day to day with wind and swell, and boat trips are confirmed on the morning.

Rest opportunities
Generous

Days 5, 7, 9, 10 and 12 have no fixed programme, and no stop on the route is a single night except the last.

Customization options.

Add nights at Pasikuda

Five becomes seven or ten without changing anything else about the route.

Trincomalee instead of Pasikuda

A busier stretch of the same coast, with seasonal whale watching roughly May to September — sightings cannot be guaranteed.

Add the Cultural Triangle

Two or three nights at Habarana at the end rather than one, with Sigiriya and a safari added.

Upgrade to premium

Move some or all nights to suites and villas with more space and privacy.

Skip the train

Drive the whole Kandy–Ella leg via Nuwara Eliya with tea-estate stops, if a fixed rail departure does not appeal.

A gentler version

Drop the hill walk, add a fourth night at Ella, and drive between the Ella viewpoints instead.

Private celebration dinner

Arranged in advance for a specific evening, where the property can genuinely do it.

Wellness add-on

Treatments or a short Ayurveda programme during the five nights on the coast.

Responsible travel

Travelling well, without grand claims.

We do not make carbon-neutral or conservation claims we cannot verify. We do hold ourselves to practical standards on every journey we plan.

  • Working with registered local guides, boatmen and suppliers where possible
  • Clear guidance on dress and conduct at the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and at Polonnaruwa
  • No touching, standing on or feeding coral while snorkelling — the reef is what keeps this bay calm
  • Reducing avoidable single-use plastic, starting with refillable water where practical
  • Supporting east-coast businesses inside their own season, rather than only in the months the south is busy
  • No off-the-record stops arranged for undisclosed commission — every optional stop on this route is disclosed upfront
Before you enquire

Important information.

Passport and entry requirements are the traveller's responsibility.

Travel insurance is strongly recommended.

This route is not sold from November to March — east-coast properties either close or run a skeleton service outside their season.

Final availability is confirmed only after booking, and accommodation is confirmed during quotation.

Weather and local conditions may require itinerary adjustments, particularly on the descent to the coast.

Driving times are approximate and exclude traffic and stops.

Train seats, boat trips and snorkelling conditions are all subject to availability and the weather on the day.

Private-dinner and spa arrangements depend on the specific property and are confirmed in the quotation.

Dietary and mobility requirements should be shared before confirmation.

Questions, answered plainly

Frequently asked questions.

Why does this honeymoon end on the east coast rather than the south?

Because of when you are travelling. From May to September the south-west monsoon works over the south and west coasts, and the sea at Mirissa, Weligama and Bentota is often rough and the skies grey. Pasikuda in the same months is usually calm and dry. Putting the beach half on the east is the honest answer to a summer wedding date, not a compromise.

Can we book this in December or January?

No. From November to March the north-east monsoon reaches this coast and most Pasikuda properties either close or run a skeleton service, so the five-night beach stay this trip is built around does not exist in those months. We would rather tell you that than sell you the itinerary with a footnote. For a December or January honeymoon, ask us about a south-coast route instead.

How long is the drive from Ella to Pasikuda, really?

About five hours excluding stops by Badulla and Mahiyanganaya, or nearer six if we have to run round by Batticaloa. It is quoted as its own day rather than being absorbed into a morning: away by 07:30 to get off the escarpment before the hill cloud closes in, a proper sit-down break at Mahiyanganaya, and an hour at the Maduru Oya tank on the way through where the timing holds.

Why is there a night at Habarana at the end?

Pasikuda to the airport is roughly seven hours in one go. Done on departure day that is a poor last memory of the trip and leaves no margin if the road is slow. Splitting it gives you a 3–3.5 hour drive with Polonnaruwa in the middle, then a 4–4.5 hour run to the terminal the next day.

Do we definitely get the hill-country train?

No — and be wary of anyone who says otherwise. Reserved seats on the Nanu Oya to Ella line are limited, released on a schedule outside our control, and sell out well ahead in the summer months. We book them as early as your dates allow. If we cannot get seats, we drive the whole leg via Nuwara Eliya with scenic stops, which takes about the same time.

What is the sea like at Pasikuda in July and August?

Usually flat. The bay is shallow and protected by a reef, so it stays swimmable when open stretches of the same coast are not. Underwater visibility is the variable part — wind and swell stir the shallows, and on a churned-up day snorkelling is not worth doing. Over five nights you would normally get several clear ones.

Is Little Adam's Peak difficult?

Not especially. It is a steady, largely stepped path of about forty-five minutes up, and it is optional. We start at 06:30 because the escarpment is usually clear at first light and clouded over by early afternoon in July and August. If you would rather not climb, the tea-garden breakfast is reached by vehicle and the ridge is in view from the table.

Will we hear the singing fish at Batticaloa?

Possibly not. The sound is faint, seasonal, and absent on most evenings — it depends on the moon, the water and a good deal that nobody has fully settled. The evening is worth taking for the lagoon at dusk and for the boatman who tells the story; treat the sound itself as a bonus rather than the point.

Can you arrange something for the occasion?

Where a property can genuinely do it, yes — a quieter room, a table set apart, a private dinner on a specific evening. Tell us the occasion and the date and we confirm what is actually possible at that hotel in the quotation. We do not list arrangements here that we have not checked.

When is the booking confirmed?

After you approve the final quotation and availability is confirmed. Accommodation is named at quotation stage and remains subject to availability until then — no property on this route has been contracted in advance.
