Sigiriya at opening time
The climb is completed before the dry-zone heat builds, walking the water gardens first and reaching the summit while the light is still low.
Suitable for most age groups and for a first visit at any pace. Walking is at leisure and can be adjusted throughout; the one early start, for the Sigiriya climb, is the only fixed demand on the day.
A genuinely achievable first week in Sri Lanka, built on three bases rather than a new hotel every night: three nights in the Cultural Triangle, two in the hill capital of Kandy, and a protected final night near the airport. The route gives ancient cities, living Buddhist culture and an elephant-country safari their own days, rather than pretending seven days is also enough for the south coast, Ella and the rest of the island.
Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa and the wildlife drive are never stacked into a single day, and both ends of the trip are deliberately protected — a late arrival shortens the first day rather than driving four hours after dark, and the final night sits near the airport so an early departure never depends on a long transfer from Kandy.
Airport (CMB) → Habarana / Sigiriya → Polonnaruwa → Dambulla → Kandy → Negombo → Airport (CMB)
This journey is a starting point, not a fixed product. It can be adjusted to your dates, interests, pace, mobility, accommodation preferences and budget.
Open any day for the full plan. The exact sequence may be adjusted around weather, local conditions and your pace, nothing here is set in stone.
Met on arrival at Bandaranaike International Airport and driven towards Habarana, with a comfort stop on the way.
Check in and rest. Nothing is scheduled on arrival day.
A quiet first evening near the tank at Habarana, with tomorrow's Sigiriya climb explained over dinner.
Kept deliberately light after a long-haul flight.
An early start for Sigiriya, walking the water gardens before the climb and reaching the summit while the light is still low and the staircase is quiet.
Lunch and rest, then a jeep safari in whichever of Minneriya, Kaudulla or Hurulu Eco Park is showing the strongest elephant activity that week.
Dinner at the hotel, with an easier day tomorrow.
Sigiriya's summit staircase is a single narrow one-way route with real capacity limits; the early start is the difference between a straightforward climb and a long, hot queue.
A return drive to Polonnaruwa for a full archaeological morning — the Quadrangle, the Gal Vihara and the royal city, at a pace that treats the site as a destination rather than a stop between transfers.
Free time at the Habarana base — the tank, a village or a bicycle ride, or simply rest.
Dinner at the hotel, the last night in the Cultural Triangle.
Cycling the Polonnaruwa royal city rather than walking it, where conditions and group comfort allow.
A drive south to Kandy, stopping at the Dambulla cave temples on the way rather than as a separate excursion.
Arrive in Kandy and settle in; a visit to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, with guidance on respectful dress and timing.
A walk around Kandy Lake as the light drops.
A traditional Kandyan dance performance, seasonally available.
The Dambulla caves involve a moderate uphill walk and steps; dress and footwear should suit a warm, occasionally crowded site.
The Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya, at an unhurried pace.
Free time for crafts, a spice garden or the market, or simply rest — the day is designed to have nothing that must be done.
Dinner in Kandy, arranged locally or at the hotel.
A relaxed departure from Kandy, with a stop en route if the timing suits.
Arrive in Negombo and settle in — a quiet stretch near the airport rather than the busier strip.
A last dinner, with the week's route talked back through.
A short Negombo lagoon boat trip or a visit to the fish market, timing permitting.
A final relaxed morning near the coast.
Private transfer to the airport, well ahead of your flight.
Departure.
The short final transfer is deliberate — it is why the last night is spent at Negombo rather than Kandy.
This route illustration is schematic and not geographically exact. Nights shown follow the standard plan and shift with any customisation.
We hold no fixed hotel list. Named properties come with your quotation, because the right choice depends on availability, season, your preferences and confirmed supplier rates.
Your choice is carried into the enquiry form below — you can still mix levels night by night there. Nothing here is booked automatically.
Where we say with adjustments, the adjustment is straightforward, tell us what you need in the enquiry form and the quotation reflects it.
One genuinely demanding morning — the Sigiriya climb — with everything else at an easy pace.
Days 1, 4 and 6, each excluding stops.
Sigiriya's staircase, Dambulla's steps, and otherwise level walking at ancient sites and gardens.
Early starts in the Cultural Triangle manage the midday heat; Kandy is noticeably milder.
The Polonnaruwa afternoon and the Kandy second day both have unscheduled time built in.
Sri Lanka weather varies by region and can change. Two monsoon systems affect different coasts at different times, so no month carries a guarantee.
Two to five nights on the south or west coast after Negombo, season permitting.
Move some or all nights to larger rooms and suites with more outlook.
Extend the route into the tea highlands before returning to the coast, for travellers with more than a week.
A city evening instead of Negombo, for travellers who want a last night with more choice of restaurants.
A Udawalawe or Wilpattu extension for a stronger wildlife focus, in place of or alongside Minneriya/Kaudulla.
We do not make carbon-neutral or conservation claims we cannot verify. We do hold ourselves to practical standards on every journey we plan.
Passport and entry requirements are the traveller's responsibility.
Travel insurance is strongly recommended.
Final availability is confirmed only after booking.
Weather and local conditions may require itinerary adjustments.
Driving times are approximate.
The wildlife park visited on day 2 is confirmed locally and cannot be fixed in advance.
Wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed on any safari.
Hotel choices remain subject to availability.
Enough for this route, yes — it is deliberately built around three bases rather than trying to also reach the south coast and the tea highlands in the same week. If you want more, the most common addition is a beach extension or a highland extension afterwards.
We choose the strongest available park for elephant movement that week, but sightings of wild animals can never be promised on any safari.
The vehicle typically leaves before 7am so the summit is reached in cooler, quieter conditions. It is the one fixed early start on this route.
It involves sustained stairs, some of them steep and exposed, over about 90 minutes to two hours at a comfortable pace. Pidurangala opposite is an easier alternative with a comparable view of the rock itself.
So the final transfer to the airport is short — about 30 to 45 minutes rather than three hours from Kandy. It protects an early departure flight.
Not with certainty. Minneriya, Kaudulla and Hurulu Eco Park form one connected ecosystem and elephants move between them; the choice is made locally, close to the day, for the best current conditions.
With adjustments. The Sigiriya climb and some walking at ancient sites are the main considerations; the pace elsewhere is easy and the three-base structure suits families who prefer fewer hotel changes.
Yes — Nuwara Eliya and Ella are the most common addition for travellers with more than a week.
The transfer to Habarana still runs that night, and the first Cultural Triangle day is shortened rather than starting with an early Sigiriya climb — that moves to the following morning instead.
